Charya Burt Cambodian Dance was established in 1993 after Charya immigrated to Northern California from her native country of Cambodia. As a traditional artist and a former dance faculty member at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, Charya is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Cambodian dance through formal instruction, workshops, public performances, and the creation of new works.
Through
my creative endeavors, I have developed classical and folk dances,
and I have also created
innovative works that push the boundaries
of the traditional form, both musically and thematically. It is my
great obligation to preserve Cambodian dance. I restage dances from
the classical repertory, document old dances and pass on the tradition
to the next generation. I also infuse the form with imagination by
creating new works. These dances reflect my concerns and passions,
and hopefully, those of people everywhere.
